‘Stanford University’

Stanford Arts / Stanford University: in 1876 Leland Stanford purchased 650 acres of Rancho San Francisquito for his Palo Alto Stock Farm (later buying adjoining properties).  After the death of Leland Stanford Jr. the Stanfords established two institutions in their son’s name the University and a museum (at one point the largest privately owned museum in the world) in order to produce ”cultured and useful citizens”. On October 1st, 1891 Stanford University opened and in 1894 the museum opened.
