Somewhere along the line, and I mean way back, before anybody thought to write it down, some guy got nervous and stuck a post in the ground. And then another one. And people looked at that and thought: now there’s an idea. We’ve been doing it ever since. Lines around countries. Lines around backyards. Little iron teeth all over the map, and every single one of them sold to us as safety.
It’s a con. It’s the oldest con there is. You put up a wall and you don’t get security, you get an itch. You get a guy on the other side wondering what you’ve got in there that’s worth all that trouble, and you get yourself, standing on your side, slowly going insane about what he’s got over there. That’s not deterrence. That’s an invitation with a bow on it. Nobody ever picked a lock they didn’t know was there. Nobody ever started a war over a field they could just walk into.
So I’ll say it: the world would be better with none of it. Rip it all down. Every post, every wire, every checkpoint with a bored kid holding a clipboard.
Now. That said. There’s a fence going up between me and the guy next door, and I want you to understand something… this one’s fine. This one’s load-bearing. This one’s practically a public service. In fact, looking at it now, I’m thinking another two feet wouldn’t kill anybody.
